About Shaun Ivory's Freeware

Who is Shaun Ivory?
In real life, I am a husband and father of two. For added fun, I am a Software Design Engineer at Microsoft, currently working on Windows Image Acquisition (WIA). If you would like to see what I've done in more detail, please see my Résumé.
Why have you written these programs?
Every once in a while, I want a particular program which does something very specific. When I find myself wanting such a program, I usually download every shareware and freeware program from the Internet that promises to do what I want. Most of the time I find something pretty close, or even perfect. Sometimes, though, every program I try has some fatal flaw. In my opinion, some of the shareware and freeware floating around out there is unbelievably horrible. Almost nothing is more offensive than a useless, badly written program that frequently crashes, yet constantly nags you to send $money$. When I find myself in such a situation, I may write the program myself. Some of these programs take on a life of their own, as other people use them, and reach a level of usefulness and quality such that I would not be horribly embarrassed to let others know I wrote them. That is when they become generally available public freeware.
What kind of programs are they?
What I would call applets. They are intentionally unobtrusive, small programs. They are designed to do a single specific thing, exactly the way I want them to.
Why didn't you answer my email?
Because I'm busy. Don't forget I have a real job. The ten or twenty minutes I'd be spending each day answering email are too valuable to me. I'd rather spend them with my family. If you need tech support, freeware isn't for you. While I've made every effort to write clean programs, in some small number of cases, they might not behave exactly as desired. If you can't get it working, email me. If I don't respond, please don't pester me, or send me nasty emails.
Are you ever going to update them again?
I'm really busy.  See above.  I have lots of ideas, but I can't really manage to find the necessary time, at the moment.
Why are they free?
  • Because I do these things for fun, and for myself.
  • Because, although I update them frequently, I don't want to feel obligated to support or enhance these programs. It takes the fun out of it, and I already have a real job.
Is the source code available?
No.
